Some more photos of Vandana's beautiful INDog family in Palakkad, Kerala: Chocos and her daughters Jelly and Vanilla. Earlier blog posts about the girls here and here.

I love reading Vandana's updates about them. 'When it's really hot, Chocos rolls around in mud and walks around like a swamp monster...sometimes she turns into a swamp monster when she goes fishing. When our canal is dry and muddy, there will be puddles in it with small fish and crabs...She loves herding cattle whenever they pass through her territory and she's always making rounds to see if there are intruders.'

Above: 'Vanilla having breakfast next to some of her favourite things, an old cup, the cloth we dry them with after a bath, and a coconut. All three of them keep their things in a kind of pile.'

Above: the sleeping sisters. Vanilla and Jelly like to spend more time in the house than their mother, no doubt because they were born as house pets. After playing and exploring they come right back inside.

As Vandana says, 'it's like they're custom made for human society but they still have their wild side intact'. Or as I like to call it, their free-roaming, village dog side.

Not INDogs: The Dhangar Dog of Maharashtra

Time to highlight one of the 'not-INDog' village breeds I mentioned in my June post, INDogs and Not-INDogs: Village dogs of India.    I have some lovely pictures to share of the Dhangari Kuttra , sheepdog of Maharashtra, thanks to a few nice people in the doggy network! A bit of background: The Dhangar community are nomadic shepherds of this region, and kuttra of course means 'dog' in marathi. Though the name Dhangari Kuttra is well known in Maharashtra, no-one seems to have consistently documented the breed or tried to preserve it in any way since W V Soman included it in his book 'The Indian Dog' (Popular Prakashan, 1963). That's the only book on Indian dog breeds till now, by the way. Major Soman's description mentions a moderate coat, tufted tail turned over the back, weight about 25 to 30 pounds (that's 11-13.6 kilos), height of males about 20 inches, strong legs, mixed colours; '...occasionally met with tan mixture but very seldom...body...

The K Gang and I just learned about this adorable Indy living in our neighbourhoood! We're very excited!  His human Vitek sent in his story and these cute photos: Eliot was born on the roadside in Bangalore, outside a friend's building. His litter had been run over by a truck and many of his siblings were killed. My friend put up a post on Facebook looking for people to adopt them. This was in 2008, and I was living in a city away from family and friends. At the time I was not looking for a dog. I knew what a big responsibility it was. But I was in a transient phase of my life, and I went over to see the pups, if anything, just to play with them. They were all friendly and loving, and I decided I would adopt one. Choosing a pup is difficult, but one of them kept coming up and jumping on me. The choice was easy. A few minutes later, he was in a cardboard box in my car off to start his new life. The first few nights he whimpered and shivered - it was equally scary for both of us....

We've brought back a classic: 'The Indian Dog' by W. V. Soman!

We have great news for fans of INDogs, Indies, aboriginal and landrace dogs, and Indian dog breeds! Presenting for your reading pleasure, for the first time ever, the digitised version of the highly sought-after classic, W. V. Soman's 'THE INDIAN DOG'. The original reference on the subject, published in 1963 by Popular Prakashan, and long out of print. This was the first comprehensive book on the topic of Indian dogs, and it remains an important reference which covers both man-made breeds as well as landrace varieties, with a chapter devoted to indigenous pariah dogs, and their differences from 'mongrels' or mix-breeds.
