Not INDogs: The Dhangar Dog of Maharashtra

Time to highlight one of the 'not-INDog' village breeds I mentioned in my June post, INDogs and Not-INDogs: Village dogs of India.    I have some lovely pictures to share of the Dhangari Kuttra , sheepdog of Maharashtra, thanks to a few nice people in the doggy network! A bit of background: The Dhangar community are nomadic shepherds of this region, and kuttra of course means 'dog' in marathi. Though the name Dhangari Kuttra is well known in Maharashtra, no-one seems to have consistently documented the breed or tried to preserve it in any way since W V Soman included it in his book 'The Indian Dog' (Popular Prakashan, 1963). That's the only book on Indian dog breeds till now, by the way. Major Soman's description mentions a moderate coat, tufted tail turned over the back, weight about 25 to 30 pounds (that's 11-13.6 kilos), height of males about 20 inches, strong legs, mixed colours; '...occasionally met with tan mixture but very seldom...body...

Momo

This handsome young INDog-mix belongs to Lalita Iyer. I love his pale eyes and serious expression! Lalita shared his story and photos: Momo before adoption Momo is our six-month old INDog-mix male. We adopted him over a month ago from CUPA in Bangalore. He was rescued by a good samaritan at four months when he had his leg injured in a car hit.  He is all fine now and as naughty and active as a six-month old should be. He has an extremely affable personality...loves to play with everyone, people and dogs! Momo with his friend Kariya, a free-roamer who stays part-time at in my brother's compound He doesn't bark much...though when he does he has a lovely deep-throated bark. However this makes him just perfect for apartment living! He has absolutely turned our lives around and we cannot imagine how we ever survived before he came into them! To Lucky, with love

Stuti Jain's touching tribute to a beloved family member This is about my little brother Lucky. He is no longer with me now...but he will be in my heart forever.  He was by my side when my human best friends left me alone...His licking my face, the wag of his tail, his bark made me feel happy about my life during some bad days. I guess all dogs are cute but Lucky was the most handsome dog I ever came across. He had the cutest and most innocent face a dog can ever have. But his acts were not that innocent (!) Once he ate the shoe of a guest who came for dinner to our place. He ate almost everything, from curtains to my expensive shoes to chair legs...everything. He had those chewing toys but he was rarely interested in playing with them. He just loved spoiling things in his free time. It was tough to punish him because of the guilty look he gave afterwards. My brother and I rescued him from a street near my house after he and his mother got hit in an accident. His mother was dead by...
