Living away from family, and with the pressures and stress of the software industry, I had no time to meet new people or make friends. One evening while I was walking down the road to reach home from work, I saw a little pup of about three weeks, peering down a drain from a pile of garbage on which she was balancing herself. Her shining bright pretty face attracted my attention. I instantly connected with her and in that very moment I decided I couldn't leave her there alone.  It was last December that I brought her home without any prior experience of having a pet, and now she has become an integral part of my life. I named her Menaka, the most beautiful angel. My day begins with Menaka's licks, and playing games with her. It ends with a quiet night walk in my locality. Handsome brothers Kalu and Lalu belong to Subrata Pain, who lives in West Bengal. The pups were gifted to him by his adivasi employees.  Kalu 'They are smart and funny and like to play a nd dig in our garden all the time,' writes Subrata.  'One of them suffered from parvo virus but now he is fine.' Kalu means black and Lalu means red, so it's not difficult to guess which is which! Kalu is the boss of the pack, and if Subrata pets Lalu first he jumps at his brother angrily. But they also love each other a lot.  The tribe they lived with traditionally used such dogs for hunting, which would explain the high prey drive of these pups. They tend to chase cats and got into trouble once for attacking the neighbour's chickens. Subrata keeps a watchful eye on them to prevent such episodes. Guuchu is a village pup from the 24 Parganas area of West Bengal.  And like all INDog pups, he's beautiful, bright-eyed and highly intelligent! Guuchu's owner Sourav Purkayastha wrote in about his cute new family member: I had asked the lady who cooks for us to look out for some deshi pups in her area. She lives in a distant village area, far away from the main city. She informed me as soon as she found a litter of pups with their mother by the roadside near her house. She started feeding them occasionally. I went to see them. They were just about two months old. I offered some treats to them and eventually they became friendlier and came near me to smell me and check me out. I followed the advice of a famous trainer on choosing my pup. Neha Arora and her husband Anoop Kayarat live in Ulaanbaatar now, and recently they went to the beautiful lake Khovsgol Nuur. It's known as the 'Blue Pearl of Mongolia' and is about 580 km away from Ulaanbaatar. Neha is my top favourite dog photographer (have you seen her portraits of Kiba and Kimaya ?) And she's a real dog person. In the midst of clicking the Ice Festival and horse-sledding, she managed to look out for the local dogs and get some beautiful pictures.  Here are a few!  Outside a 'ger' I've never seen pictures of Mongolian village dogs before, so this was really interesting for me and other aboriginal dog fanciers in our network. These dogs seem to be of the husky/spitz type. Just as our tropical village dogs are usually of the dingo/pariah type. It's possible many North Asian village dogs look like this. Beautiful INDog-mix   Arrow  was on this blog last May; and Shelby sent an update about him some days ago.  I love all the heart-warming adoption stories here, but Arrow's is particularly satisfying. I'll never forget his anxious little face in his early photos, when he was going from foster to foster. And look at him now, so happily settled with Sheldon, Aiden and their two cats!  Shelby writes: 'It has been almost a year since Arrow entered our lives and we couldn't be happier. He is a wonderfully affectionate boy. He is very intelligent, and has become an excellent watch dog. He takes special pride in watching over us. He loves his walks, running in fields, and going on trips with us. We are overjoyed to have stumbled upon him and given him a home.' Remember I mentioned last week that  Matrix  had a brother called Rusty? Here he is! Just as handsome and just as lucky! When the pups' mother died, a very kind-hearted student named Sushant rescued them. He already owns a pair of dogs. And two students at his college, Rupesh and Rahul, had often mentioned that they'd like to keep dogs. So he asked them about adopting the orphans. Rupesh took Matrix and Rahul Ganguly took home Rusty.  Rahul is an animal lover and already has four aquariums and a rabbit. But  Rusty is his first dog. 'It was a tough challenge for me as I'd never had a puppy,' he says. 'It was like a leap of faith when I brought Rusty home.' 'At first my mom was very uncomfortable with him as she was afraid of dogs. 'But eventually Rusty made such a bond with all of us that her fear was totally gone. Just got the latest  Sophie  news from Goa! And it's all lovely and has put a big smile on my face. This gorgeous Indy princess is now 18 months old, and astonishingly smart (no surprises there). And astonishingly smart at getting her doting humans to pamper her (no surprises there, either!) Remember how she adopted her humans instead of the other way around? 'I don't know if I ever told you the reason for her name,' writes David. 'I think it's something very cute. You see, she chose us, we didn't choose her...
