Buddy Subramanian

Image
Happy golden INDog-mix Buddy lives in Bhopal with his adoring family, the Subramanians. (This is the second Buddy on this blog: not our friend Buddy in Mumbai ) . Aarti tells us how her parents came to adopt this cute little furball: 'On 25 December 2012 he had somehow crawled through our gate and was found below our car in the porch area. He was about ten or twelve days old with his eyes partially open, very weak and injured in many places. My parents looked around for his mother or siblings for some time. Unable to trace anyone, they tried to keep him warm (it was 5 degrees) and feed him milk. But he was too small and weak to even lick milk from my dad's finger.  'Although dad had wanted a pet since we lost our beloved dog Notty, mom was reluctant to adopt at that time because she was still struggling to cope with Notty's loss. For around two days they kept a constant check on the pup from our office on the main road. But then he kept crawling towards the main road ag...

Orange and Combo

Image
This pretty pair live with Anirban Kundu's family in Purulia, West Bengal. Their names are as lovely as the dogs themselves. Orange is an INDog-mix (the other half may be spitz I think). She's four years old. Orange Combo the handsome tricolour is her son and just over a year old. Combo Orange has inherited the INDog trait of liking to sit  on high places like walls.  Mother and son Combo sunbathing Oof, that's enough sun...now for some shade I love these pics of Combo eating a biscuit of a two-wheeler saddle! Anirban looks after the free-roamers outside his house too. He plans to do welfare work for street dogs some day - a much-needed service in most parts of India! Gucci and Teddy

Image
These two cuties live with Stephanie Stevens Menezes in Nasik. Gucci is the glossy  black lady, and Teddy the soft brown...teddy. 'I rescued Gucci from Kolkata when she was 10 days old,' says Stephanie. 'And Teddy was rescued twice: once from the road and next from neglectful owners in Bangalore. He finally became my son when my friend flew him to me in Kolkata when he was four months old. 'Now Gucci is five and a half years old, and Teddy is two.' A goodnight hug for Teddy Gucci, black beauty 'These are my babies during an inspection of their mummy's vegetable garden. Thankfully I met their exacting standards!' Tippu

Image
A long-overdue blog post on the fabulous Tippu! Some of us have been following his activities on the Facebook page, but this is his first appearance in this blog.  Tippu lives in Thrissur with Sajoy Peter's family which includes German Shepherd Tommy. These lucky dogs get to walk and play in lots of open spaces in the neighbourhood (apart from their own yard).  Sajoy shared some pictures from Tippu's photo album, from his tiny puppy days last year to the present.  The outdoor album will be posted soon. Look out for it! With his brother  Photos: Sajoy Peter Thrissur Kerala Please do not use content or images from this site without permission and acknowledgment

Minal Browny

Image
Meet Minal Browny, thunder-puppy! She was sitting in the middle of the Bangalore highway when Velmurugan passed her on his bike. He picked her up and searched without success for her mother. The pup was probably abandoned.  'She was little and I couldn't leave her in the street as she would definitely have died. So I adopted her. At the beginning of the day she was very fearful, but after that she was very active. Her eyes are really beautiful.' Most people would have passed by and left her there on the highway. Lucky little Minal met one of the rare humans who cared.  'My family named her Browny,' says Velmurugan. 'But she is a fast sprinter so I named her Minal, which means "thunder" in Tamil. Minal Browny.' The first photo below was clicked after her adoption on 26 March, and more recent ones follow. She plays a lot and like all puppies loves chewing things (and her humans!) Article in HT Brunch, August 2013

I forgot to post this story last year! Mitali Parekh interviewed me along with four other women for her story 'Gone to the dogs' in Hindustan Times Brunch. It was about women who do interesting work with dogs. It appeared in the August 17 issue. I'm sharing the whole article here.  You can also read it here .
